Sound Design is an integral part of any movie you watch. Think about the last 10 films you’ve watched, either at the theaters or at home on your TV, or even on your smartphones with your favorite pair of earphones. Now imagine that favorite moment from those movies. Can you imagine that same scene or the impact those scenes have had on you if there was no sound?
I’d argue that Sound is what makes a movie.
But… what exactly is Sound Design? According to Wikipedia, it is “the art and practice of creating sound tracks for a variety of needs. It involves specifying, acquiring or creating auditory elements using audio production techniques and tools.”
But the above doesn’t explain anything. In this case, it’s best to let YouTube explain.
Nerdwriter, one of my favorite YouTubers has put out this fantastic explainer video that tells you what Sound Design really is.
If you haven’t already, you should definitely watch Munich. It is one of the finest films ever made.
